Thanks for the kind comments,Fred. Actually, I took these outside today in the natural light, both of these were handheld. I really want a higher shutter speed and less F stop. Being that a coin is basically flat,I really don't worry about DOF. But being I am hand Holding the camera, I like to get a high Shutter speed (Cloudy Today) which makes great coin shots, but slow shutter speeds. Hope all this makes sense. Just my 2 cents worth. Frank Settings:Macro Iso: 100 Shutter: 1/100 Fstop:4.5 Several Handheld Shots

Great images, Frank! I hear a lot about this "natural light" thing .... I should give it a try sometimes :)
Thanks for a compliment, Fred. Light is my shortfall right now. I'm only working with a single 50W table lamp.

Thanks for the kind comments, Roman! You have outstanding Images also! I need to have me a setup inside for lighting like you.You can't always go outside and have natural Lighting because of the Weather. If you get a chance try "Natural Lighting", but not in direct sunlight.

Has anyone mentioned a remote shutter release? I would be happy with my Sony mvc FD87 except it does not have one and the timer feature is a pain to use. Does the Canon S2IS have the provision for a electronic or cable type shutter release? Thanks

Hi Airedale and welcome to the forum! Lots of friendly people here with lots of knowledge and experience.
I am not aware of a remote shutter capability for my S2 IS nor did I find any reference to one in the manual. I had one for my Nikon FtN (F1) which I almost never used in 35 years, preferring the timer setting. The timer setting on the S2 is very easy to use.

The S2 is software-controllable - it can be USB-wired to a computer as a remote shooter. The Canon-provided software gives me fits - I'm an accredited Adult Education Instructor of computer technicians, and I cannot make this cr*p run stably in my system. There is aftermarket software as well, though.
Either way, the implication is that this camera can be remote-shuttered.

Here are a couple more shots of a "Victoria Crown" coin took with my Panasonic FZ7 in natural light, outside, and handheld. Frank

Thanks Fred & Super Dave, The Sony I have now seems to wobble, thus blurring the picture, even when I use the tripod. The timer is a pain to use as it requires 3 or 4 menu moves every time it is used. I am neck and neck on deciding on the Canon S2 IS & the Panasonic FZ7 based on what I have read and seen here. The Panasonic seems to be inching ahead with its advertised " anti wobble " technology. They both seem to be around $300. with bonus accessories on ebay. My main interest is photographing cameo silver and copper coins almost all in slabs. Any suggestions from anyone to lean me one way or the other? Best Wishes, John

Nope. I'm really happy with my S2, and I've never heard a bad word spoken about the Panasonic. There are fine examples of the work of each in this thread. The delayed shutter on the Canon is a dedicated button on the top of the camera which cycles thru single-exposure, multi-exposure and delayed-shutter. In another menu, you set the parameters (how long a delay, or how many consecutive pics), and that setting is saved until you change it. Delayed shutter for me is pressing one button two times, and it sticks until I turn the camera off. It's as simple as Macro, which is also a dedicated button on the camera.

Another thing - is there an "accepted" image size for the boards? I try to limit all of my images to 600 width, which decreases sharpness, but anything larger would probably hinder those with monitor resolution of 800x600 and lower... Here's a couple of newps I picked-up last night. I think I was able to capture the color on the Haitian piece. I noticed that positioning the light higher and overhead showed more of the color, as oppose to having the light low/angled. ~Roman

You don't have to worry about that, the forum automagically resizes to 500 px on the long side and creates a click to enlarge back to the original size. Rui hooked up that feature for us because I hate "stretchy" screens too. Click on your photos above....

OK, The S2 is giving the "memory card error" and I see its a very common problem with lots of canon models, I've changed memory cards but still the same, I lost the pictures too. I think I'll return it while I can and maybe exchange to another brand. If its a problem with the canons, no point in getting another Canon.

What size is the card may I ask? I just purchased a S3 on ebay yesterday with a 1 gig card that I would think would be good for hundreds of pictures.
