I had heard of a new 5 dollar note a couple years back, but haven't heard anymore. Did it come out yet? Who is on it? Is it still in the works? I'm in the States so it's sometimes challenging to keep up to date on information like this.

In 2020 the central bank said they were working on a new $5.00 note which would be out in a few years but no sign of anything yet.

@JimmyD Thank you. I just didn't want to have missed it. No trips up north in the last couple years.

Happy Canada Day!

With this in mind, I wonder if the Bank of Canada will finally release the new $5.00 banknote sometime this year (after they promised us the new $5 about 5 years ago)? They really seem to be dragging their feet on this one....

Any thoughts on when this new vertical designed note will appear? Any thoughts on who might appear on the obverse?

Check the link in my Dec 2022 post to see a "DH article" on the subject (just in case you forgot some of the notable Canadians they may wish to feature on the $5 note).

I do not want to get political.
However, it will definitely be a woman. I also think it'll be very likely a woman from a first nation community.

I like the current $5 note because it honours Canadian achievements in space. In fact I made a video about that. If the new note doesn't maintain that theme, I think it's a big mistake.

Here are two quotes from the BoC's annual report of 2022 regarding the new $5 banknote:

1.:
''The next step for the new $5 bank note is to select visual design elements and security features to make the note both beautiful and difficult to counterfeit. The Bank will make these decisions once the Minister of Finance chooses the portrait subject.''

2.:
''Looking forward
In 2023, the Bank will:
begin working on the design and security features for the next $5 bank note, subject to a final decision by the Minister of Finance on the portrait subject''

My question: What have they done during the last couple of years?
And no, the Covid-19 pandemic cannot and will not be excepted as an excuse.

I hope we keep Laurier on the $5
Look at the $50 and $100 instead for change.

@DBM
Thanks for the link. Very interesting information.

When a politician (here the Finance Minister) doesn't make a decision for three years you know it's a ''hot'' issue she doesn't want to touch, especially when there might (or will) be an election in the foreseeable future.
