Thanks, jbuck and Blastenpene4!

@Blastenpene4, I also knew little about fractional notes when I bought my first ones two years ago. Another member on this forum sometimes shared his fractional notes here and on a paper money forum, and that got me interested. Along with a few notes, I also bought two recommended reference books and started studying. Didn't take long to get hooked!

After putting this off a long time, I've gone down another rabbit hole - I acquired my first two fractional note specimens. The first is a 25 cent first issue narrow margin back specimen, Fr#1282spnmb. PMG pop in 67EPQ is 1 with none higher. The second is a 25 cent 1st issue wide margin face specimen, Fr#1281spwmf. PMG pop in 67EPQ is 6 with none higher. And so it begins!

Dang Hokie! I think I have to go to California gold certificates as your collecting all the nice fractionals.

I still have you to blame (actually to thank) for getting me into fractional notes to begin with, hfjacinto! And, sort of like potato chips, now I just can't stop...

It's been many months since I made an addition to my fractional note set, but I managed to pick up these two less-common notes today at the Heritage FUN auction.

The first is a 25 cent 3rd issue note, Fr#1299. This note is on fiber paper with solid bronze front surcharges. I had a slightly higher grade on my want list for this Fr#, but it has such strong, clear surcharges on the back I couldn't pass it up. PMG has graded 56 in total, with 3 in 58, 1 in 58EPQ, and 14 numerically higher.

The other is a 50 cent 3rd issue red-back Spinner note, Fr#1325. This note has small position indicators "a" and "1" on the front. These notes were printed in sheets of 12, with the 3 notes at the top having position indicator "a", and the 4 notes on the left having position indicator "1". Thus, only 1 note on each sheet of 12, the top left one, had both a "1" and an "a" printed. The "a" is in the lower left field, and the "1" is in the left field about half-way down the note. PMG has graded 48 in total, with 8 in 65EPQ and only 4 higher.

By the way, the holder has the annotation "As Made Ink" on the back label; the bit of red on the front is not a stain, but some ink transfer from the back.

Nice pick ups from HA @hokiefan_82

I would have never found the "1" & "a" if you had not explained where their positions were. Thanks for sharing & the added info.
