I think this is becoming an epidemic on ebay. The policy that ebay states about protected I.D.'s is absurd. "Feedback" by Ebays own admission is the "backbone" of trust building between buyers and sellers! On top of that I think we have yet another fly by night slabbing company. It looks like this seller makes the auctions for his "certified" coins private but the uncertified are not. I wouldn't touch anything from this seller.  |

Why make anything on ebay private? In my opinion "private" on ebay means their is something to hide. |

Here's Ebays "answer" to questions about "Private Feedback" My question is why give the option to begin with?  Making Your Feedback Public or Private ebay provides members with the ability to keep their Feedback profiles public or to make them private. ebay strongly encourages its members to keep Feedback profiles public so that everyone can benefit from feedback other ebay members have left. A private profile allows others to view only ratings but does not allow others to view feedback comments. Additional Information Why does ebay encourage members to keep feedback public? A member's feedback profile is a valuable asset on ebay. Making a member's feedback profile public generates trust and increases the likelihood that other ebay members will do business with a member. After all, most members want to see another member's feedback profile before they buy from them. On the other hand, if a member makes their feedback profile private, it means that only they can view their feedback comments. By making the feedback profile private, members may decrease other ebay participants' desire to conduct business with them. Please also note that while the comments will be private, other members will still be able to see the number of positive, neutral and negative comments on a member profile. ebay strongly encourages its members to consider this carefully when considering the decision to make your Feedback Profile private. Why does ebay have this policy? Feedback is each member's reputation on ebay and is the foundation of trust on ebay. eBay understands that there may be times when a comment so undermines a member's reputation that they believe they must hide it. Although ebay understand this, ebay also believes that transparency is one of the pillars of ebay. Members who hide feedback have the feedback score next to their User ID replaced with the term "private". This tends to encourage potential buyers and sellers to more closely review the member's feedback profile. |

When I see the word "private" on any listing I automatically hit the back button. It's too easy to get burned on ebay, and I'm not going to get burned on purpose. |

I have yet to see any ebay auction in which the purchase is so valuable that the purchaser's identity should be hidden for security reasons. In addition to its feedback system, ebay needs to reevaluate and revise its "private" auction and "private" feedback concepts and policies. |

I never, under any circumstances bid on any item that is private or members feedback is private. I never ever trust anyone that has something to hide.

I too agree that it is crazy for a seller to "hide" their feedback. When I see a seller with somewhat low feedback, I investigate with an open mind(in case a few people tried to blackmail, etc.). When I see a seller with hidden feedback I dont even waste time looking at the auction!! Well there's my Two Cents lol. |

I agree with Jayson, I will not buy from sellers with Private feedback, ebay is risky enough without masking feedback. I also won't buy anything "certified" by INB (International Numismatic Bureau) - they make SGS look conservative. Apparently putting pocket change in a slab rates an automatic MS70 with these guys (or more likely this guy). Actually, if someone finds a coin certified by INB at anything LESS than a MS65, I'll bid on it and buy it for them. ;-) |

It is like anything you purchase thru ebay..... "LET THE BUYER BEWARE" in this case be VERY aware. |

I agree with you all, no need to be private unless you have something to hide!! As for the private ID's type in a search for Trade dollars and 1) See how many are coming from China (seems like there are more there than here!!!) 2)If you actualy dare to look at a listing from one of these sellers from China and look at their feedback, 80% are Private. Unbelievable.  |

The other day I saw some auctions where you had to be approved before bidding. What's up with that? The items in question were of low cost and not really much value.

I concur with previous posters.I never buy from private feedback/bidding auctions.On the other hand,i had quite a few sellers holding their feedback until I've left it for them,even though I always pay instantly.I've been told that sometimes people blackmail sellers for petty reasons,and that is why more and more sellers decide to do this.

I sold on ebay for a short time and made the mistake of giving feedback as soon as buyers paid. BIG MISTAKE. There are a ton of SCUM buyers too. I don't really blame anyone for holding feedback until the end. If ebay had a way of arbitrating feedback and removing all retaliatory feedbacks that would be different. |
