1974 New Zealand dollar commemorating the Commonwealth Games - I've always assumed that the thing in the middle of the reverse design is a flag...

Bolivia 10 centavos 2012:

Bolivia had to "two up" Panama - three National Flags on each side flanking the Coat-of-Arms for Bolivia vs. "just" two each side for Panama - six total vs. four.

Thanks for posting!

@IndianGold Eagle: They're all the Mint's children and each is special in its own way!

The unnamed 17th century sailing ship depicted on the reverse of the 1936 Long Island Tercentenary half dollar is shown flying multiple flags - the flag at the ship's stern is the most clearly visible. Unfortunately, the flags are lacking in design details, so a definitive ID can't be made from the coin.

It is likely, however, that the source image(s) (if from the correct time period) used by Howard Kenneth Weinman to develop the ship design for the coin, featured the flags of the Dutch West Indies Company; Howard was the son of noted US coin designer Adolf Weinman. The company was chartered by the Republic of the Netherlands in 1621 to battle against Spanish ships and trading posts around the world on behalf of the Netherlands, as well as settle and govern (and profit from) Dutch colonies in North and South America. For example, it played a central role in the colonization of New Amsterdam (present-day New York City) which included Long Island (then 't Lange Eylandt).

Considering the Company's New Amsterdam connections, it seems very plausible that the ship presented on the coin was meant to represent the many Company ships that journeyed to the area to bring settlers and supplies, and trade with the local Native Americans.

I think this one has a great, classic allegorical obverse design! Thanks for posting!
