Hi community!
I hope it's OK for someone who doesn't collect banknotes (in any serious way) to post a question here...
I usually keep lower denomination notes from my travels as a souvenirs. I also did this back in 1987 when I travelled to China. I recently discovered that the 2 yuan banknote from 1960 seems to be something collectors are looking for - and I see wildly diverging prices online (usually at least two-digit, but some uncirculated once seem to fetch thousands of dollars) and I have not managed to work out what's special about the very pricey ones (apart from, of course, the UNC status, which isn't the case for mine). I'm not really looking to sell mine - but I'd like to make sure I don't accidentally have one of the very rare ones without knowing. Could someone perhaps let me know?
Many thanks in advance!
Sebastian

I don't know but I can point you to some online resources. The 2 Yuan is coded as P-875 (as seen on the bank note museum):
http://www.banknote.ws/COLLECTION/c.../CIN0875.htm

Another resource to reference is Numista's page on P-875:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/note204044.html

Numista also has links to ebay sales of the same note. Your note looks to be block 563 (the Roman numerals before the serial #). Check it up against some light to see if you can discern what type of watermark it has. There appears to be 2 versions & the stars with "ancient pu coins' appears to be less common. The bank note museum has the best image of what to look for on the watermark.

Sadly, there are a lot of social media sites which make wild claims about ordinary notes with no evidence for the crazy sale/auction prices they write about. The other sad part is that ebay sellers will ask the moon & stars for their notes. There is a replacement example of P-875 listed for nearly $9000 USD.

Unfortunately, there are also several unsavoury individuals who have been making decent copies of the certifier holders as well as decent looking fakes. ebay does not vet what is being sold so it is literally the "wild, wild west" & you take your chances in a very heated Asian market right now.

Excellent - many thanks for this! I seem to have the more common 875a version with the stars watermark.
At least I'm absolutely sure mine is not a fake - it's been in one of my drawers since 1987...
