Here's a Bulgarian 1 lev that I picked for best condition out of a bunch of Bulgarian circulating change (in 2014)...

I apologize for the crud. Unfortunately I'm not sure if the forehead is actually worn or if it's just lighting.

The big numismatic event of 2002 was undoubtedly the introduction of the Euro. Although some of the participating countries had started striking coins and dating them as far back as 1999, they did not enter circulation until January 1, 2002. The coins share a common reverse:

Here are examples of the obverses of 2002-dated Euro coins from the 12 initial participating countries:

Austria 5 cents:

Belgium 20 cents:
How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Seventh-Edition!-Ended-At-1380-Waiting-On-1379
Finland 20 cents:

France 2 euros:

Germany 50 cents:

Greece 2 cents:

Ireland 20 cents:

Italy 1 cent:

Luxembourg 2 cents:

Netherlands 50 cents:

Portugal 2 cents:

Spain 1 euro:

Suddenly collectors could find coins from all across Europe in their change, but from February 2002 there were no more German marks, French francs, Italian lire or any of the other 'legacy' currencies in circulation, and the chance of finding a rare coin like the 1991 French 2F in change vanished. But euro collecting was going to prove highly popular...

I have the 10, 20 and 50 seniti of that coinage in 2002 and mostly UNC too. The designs date from the mid 1970s as part of a grow more food series for FAO.

Turkish 100,000 Lira - this was the smaller version and by this stage they had coins up to 1 million lira and 50 million lira in notes. This coin is the size of the modern 10 Kurus, what it ended up being after 2005. Expect more Turkish classics from me as we go backwards.

Not a usual "coin" here, and might not count as a coin at all - this is the only micronation coin I own!
...assuming I hadn't forgotten any others, anyway.

Principality of the Russian treasure seeker Yury Kharchuk
1 kubyshka (pot), 2002, aluminium
Samara mint

Yury Kharchuk's principality, founded in 2002, is one of the many micronations claiming territory in Antarctica. Apparently it was so confident in its claim that in 2011 it sued another Antarctic-claiming micronation!
Unfortunately it appears that more recently Kharchuk had been spouting some kind of weird pigeon-themed woo. I suppose anyone who dares to claim a micronation must be at least a little crazy.

"Treasure seeker" is basically a fancy way to say "metal detectorist", I guess. The crossed items on the obverse are metal detecting implements (while the reverse features the titular pot).

3M has shown some but 2001 saw Australia's centenary and a total of 20 commemorative coins were issued.

These were 1 x$1 dollar coin - 10 x 50 cents and 9 x 20 cents.

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Seventh-Edition!-Ended-At-1380-Waiting-On-1379
The most common were the centenary dollar and Federal 50 cents, these showed the coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Australia. The 50c had a mintage of 43 million, $1 - 28 million

The other 18 coins were all state based and mintages were low around the 2 to 2.5 million per state. The 50 cent coins all showed coats of arms, and the 20 cent pieces were designed by children showing themes and symbols of each state and territory.

Each state had their coins released into change over the course of 2001 and packs of uncirculated coins were released at $6 or so each. An album was also issued. In addition, proof sets of the whole thing and each state were also issued.
