Note the paper shows the imprint of where the coin was stored and you just used an ink well pen to label it. Must have been hard to show off your collection to people.

Trebonianus Gallus (251-253 AD). AR Antoninianus Temple
Antioch (Antakya).
Obv. IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust
right; three pellets below.
Rev. SAECVLVM NOVVM, Roma (?) seated facing on throne within hexastyle
temple, holding sceptre.
RIC 91.

Fortunate that the note and coin haven't been separated over the past century.

Then there are the pieces with ink applied directly on the coin (often by museums).

At first I thought the cursive script said "part silver, part decadence", but "period [of] decadence" works well too. Thx for posting!

Spence:

This is from another one, I put up a bunch with these paper holder / envelopes / tags coins in the last two days. By the way, powdered drugs were in paper as well, what was not in folded paper packets back in the day it seems... So you can figure out what the collector was meaning with that word....That actually might be his word for the coin type. Like antoninianus....

Notice Spence he just calls these "copper" ...

Just some more examples of the handwriting which might help. To understand they were trying to say in the 1800's perhaps... The third image might be a different collector's hand.

Ok Spence, this is the word decadence as you suggest. His Domitian has the same "n" for his handwriting. So you were correct. And looking this up, was it really only the late 19th and early 20th century this term were even used for later Roman periods? Seems so: ---->"Roman decadence refers to the popular criticism of the culture of the later Roman Empire's elites, seen also in much of its earlier historiography and 19th and early 20th century art depicting Roman life."<----

Back then, to show off your coins to other collectors, you either physically took your coins to a coin club, or you took a rubbing of your coin, and mailed them the rubbing.
