Arrows are the weapon to be found on the 1921 Alabama Statehood Centennial Half Dollar - an American Bald Eagle is depicted clutching four arrows in its talons on the coin's reverse. The reverse design is a modified rendering of the Alabama State Seal that was in use at the time of the Alabama Statehood Centennial (1919). The 1868 Alabama law that defined the Seal states that the eagle is to be shown clutching three arrows, but the depiction of four arrows appears commonplace. Arrows in heraldry represent a readiness/willingness to fight and defend. The obverse features the conjoined portraits of William Wyatt Bibb (left, rear portrait), the last Governor of the Territory of Alabama and, in 1819, the first Governor of the State of Alabama, plus Thomas Erby Kilby, the Alabama Governor at the time of the State's centennial anniversary in 1919; Kilby was still Governor in 1921 when the coin was released. The coin's designs were prepared and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser. 1921 Alabama Statehood Centennial Half Dollar For other of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, including more details about the history and design of the Alabama half dollar, see: Commems Collection.
