The 1928 Hawaiian half dollar was issued "in commemoration of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by Captain James Cook, and for the purpose of aiding in establishing a Captain James Cook memorial collection in the archives of the Territory of Hawaii." (Public Law 70-98) Obviously, the "discovery" being commemorated was that of the first encounter by Europeans - those living on the islands had "discovered" it long before! The coin's reverse design features a Hawaiian chieftain (IMO, based on the statue of King Kamehmeha I by Thomas R. Gould) atop a lush hill with Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, the volcanic mountain, in the background. In the chieftain's left hand is his weapon - a spear with a barbed tip. The obverse of the coin presents a left-facing portrait of Captain James Cook, the British explorer who is generally credited as the European "discoverer" of the Pacific Ocean islands, naming them the Sandwich Islands in honor of the Earl of Sandwich in Great Britain. (Some historians, however, consider Spanish captain Ruy López de Villalobos as the first European to sight the islands, doing so as early as 1542.) 1928 Hawaiian (European) Discovery Sesquicentennial Half Dollar King Kamehameha I Statue

The 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar was issued "in commemoration of the commencement on June 18, 1923, of the work of carving on Stone Mountain, in the State of Georgia, a monument to the valor of the soldiers of the South...and in memory of Warren G. Harding, President of the United States of America, in whose administration the work was begun." (Public Law 68-46).The obverse of the half dollar features General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson of the Confederate Army. Both are shown on horseback, moving left, at the front of what the viewer is to imagine is a long procession of Confederate officers and soldiers. Lee is the forward of the two figures and is captured in a side profile; Jackson is depicted in the rear turned to face Lee (i.e., forward). Lee is shown with a sword (in its scabbard) hanging from his left hip. Lee is not known to have used a sword while fighting in the Civil War, it was a ceremonial weapon. Lee wore the ceremonial sword when he surrendered to Grant at Appomattox. A couple of notes about the sword: 1) It was made by the firm of Louis-Francois Devisme,a French company located in Paris; 2) The sword's blade features the gilded text: "Genl. Robert E. Lee. C.S.A. from a marylander. 1863." and 3) After many years of the identity of the "marylander" being unknown, it was recently discovered/revealed that it was Richard Tyson of Baltimore. 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar

The 1935 Hudson, NY Half Dollar was issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the City's founding. The coin's obverse design is based on the then-current seal of the City of Hudson. It features Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, holding a trident while sitting backward on a spouting whale; a mermaid blowing a conch shell is seen in the background at left. A trident is a three-pronged spear that can be used as a weapon or a tool for fishing. The reverse of the coin depicts Hudson's ship, the Half Moon with a rather fanciful crescent moon in the background at left. The coin's designs are the work of Chester Beach. 1935 Hudson, NY Sesquicentennial Half Dollar

You'll need to get out your magnifying glass for this one! The 1936 York County, Maine commemorative half dollar was struck to commemorate the 300th anniversary of York County, ME. The coin presents Brown's Garrison on its obverse (side designation per the US Mint); the depiction includes three men on guard duty outside the Garrison walking its perimeter. Each of the guards is carrying a rifle. The guards, and their rifles, are small but are clearly revealed under close inspection! The coin's reverse presents a rendering of the York County Seal. 1936 York County, ME Half Dollar For more of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, including others about the York County, ME half dollar, see: Commems Collection.

The 1935-36 California-Pacific International Exposition half dollar (aka, the "San Diego") was struck to financially support the Exposition and its projects. Its obverse design is based on the Great Seal of California and includes many of the same design elements, including Minerva. Minerva is depicted supporting a shield with her left hand while holding a spear with her right - two members of the "weapons family." The reverse of the coin presents two of the more iconic buildings of Balboa Park, the site of the Exposition. Seen are the California Tower and the dome of the Chapel of St. Francis with the top of the Entrance Portal to the Tower area seen in the foreground. 1935-S California-Pacific International Exposition Half Dollar For other of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, including more details about the history and design of the San Diego half dollar, see: Commems Collection.
