I'd like to any info on the specific error this coin exhibits. I believe it is a capped die, struck thru die cap.... the information I've been able to find is vague or contradictory. Thanks for your time and insight.

Yes knowing the weight could help us rule out acid treatment to just the reverse. Thx.

I'm confident it hasn't had any alteration other than circulation. I know I won't convince anyone but I look at thousands of pennies under a loupe every year and I know this is a strike error. Also there are several 1979D pennies that have been certified that look similar. Thanks again.

I'm not seeing any signs of acid damage on this one.

This doesn't look like a normal obverse for being a die cap but I'm pretty sure that's what this one is. I would think the "cup" to it should be deeper since it appears to be a middle-stage die cap (with some of the reverse details still showing through).

The obverse die would have been the hammer die during this period and this coin would have been stuck to the die creating a die cap. The next coin entering the striking chamber would have had a full reverse design but the obverse would have been obstructed by this coin which was capping the obv die. This die cap would have left a reverse design on the coins that followed, up to a point.

Originally this die cap would have had a full reverse design. As more coins are struck the reverse design starts thinning out and getting mushy looking. But as more coins are struck the die cap tends to get a deeper and deeper cup-like appearance to it. I'm not seeing that cup-like appearance to your coin. maybe this is a fairly early die cap?

A lot of coin scratches on this one. Seems suspicious with one rim present on one area and the other area missing and the weakness of the design and weight differences. Someone may have tried to create an error on this coin. If it were a anvil die cap, then I would expect to see part of the obverse die design on the reverse? (Not that I have seen one like that though) Save it for now.

Looks like a struck through a capped die to me. You just don't see too many reverses.

The reverse appears to have been attached by a buffing tool. Note that the obverse shows no signs of increased effective striking pressure.

I meant to say "attacked by a buffing wheel", but y'all probably figured that out by now.
