I am normally not a fan of details graded coins but I liked the look of this one and I've been wanting to replace an old counterfeit one with a genuine example at a reasonable cost. $275 total.

Good move. The mount appears to have been on the edges so the faces weren't affected. The eye-appeal on the obverse is truly gorgeous. Nice natural toning with contrasting patina in the recesses.

Yes, I made an offer of $275 and the seller accepted it. I know its not the nicest of Trade dollars and a most common date, but for the price I think the details look pleasing. I would have preferred a straight grade but a comparable price for a straight grade would have left me in the F-VF range. At any rate I feel whole again knowing that the one counterfeit specimen I got stuck with is now replaced by at least a genuine coin even if it is a details grade.

IMHO, this is an XF coin that barely approaches the 45 level. The AU holder is a gift, and I'd not remove it from same if you wish it to retain the cost. If this coin was cracked out and offered to a dealer, I'd be very surprised at any offer above $125.

As long as you're happy with it, that's what counts the most.
