Ebay Buying Question, Re Offers - Coin Community Forum

I made an offer to a seller I purchased a few coins from, the seller never got back to me. I checked this morning and it said offer expired. I assumed he thought my offer was too low (it was a low offer) So I made another offer and picked up the 2 coins from another dealer early this AM. Today the first seller accepted the offer I made that expired. I really don't need 2 of the same coins, and while the offer I made was low, but after thinking about it, it would be wasted money, so I asked the dealer to cancel my order as it had passed the offer window. This is the first time that an offer was accepted after the time passed (didn't think it was possible). I'm wondering if it was expired because the listing ended yesterday but the offer is still in effect for 24 hours? Am I still obligated to buy the coin even after the offer passed? I'm sure if you explain the situation to the seller they will understand. Especially true if they have a return policy as the outcome of you returning the unwanted coin after paying sounds like a waste of time and money on postage! Report this Post to the Staff
SpeedDemonND Valued Member United States 357 Posts	Posted 10/16/2022 4:04 pm If ebay indeed sent you a notification that your offer expired, then I would let the seller know that and that you went ahead and purchased the item somewhere else after that, and would like to cancel the order since you're not sure how/why it ended up going through after it expired. livingwater Pillar of the Community United States 2213 Posts	Posted 10/16/2022 4:36 pm I don't think you are obligated to buy since your offer expired. The seller should cancel the order. SpeedDemonND Valued Member United States 357 Posts	Posted 10/16/2022 5:19 pm I'm curious...did ebay actually tell you that your offer had expired or the "item got away" type of thing, or did you just assume so because the listing had ended? It physically shouldn't be possible for the seller to accept an offer that expired because that option would no longer be there for him to click on to accept. It sounds like you assumed the offer ended because the listing ended, but unless it was an auction, I believe the listings don't actually "end" but just get relisted, as if it's simply refreshed for another 30 days or whatever. Either way, I would contact the seller and let him know you thought the offer expired and the listing ended. I'm sure he'll understand. Report this Post to the Staff

But after thinking about it, I will take responsibility for my offer and I am obligated to buy the coin as I made the offer and the offer was accepted. I sent the seller the money. Its a different date so I might keep the coin or give it away as a gift to my daughters boyfriend. I felt guilty as the seller did nothing wrong and the price was very reasonable and I want to buy a few more coins from the seller. At $40 total I'll use it as a lesson learned.
