@smp, it looks like you are asking about the spacing between the first few letters of LIBERTY. Can you please add an in-focus closeup image of this region? Thx.

I may be reading way too much into this but both rims, in identical spots, show an odd strike. Maybe a very light cupped, off center strike, creating, a very slight upheaval in the obverse face, in the area you are seeing slight distance, between the L and I. The yellow arrows are pointing to what looks like a difference in the level of the field, because of the lighting difference. Here is a link to the "cupped off center" and if this is the case, yours is VERY slight but possibly enough, to cause this space. And might just simply be damage too.

As Spence said, a nice, clear closeup would help.

Good point Makescents.

I wonder if the collar die may have cracked in this area but it hadn't fallen away yet.
Maybe this allowed the outer part of the design (between the L I) to expand outward until the metal reached the collar die

Seems improbable, I know, but the I in LIBERTY may have been shoved sideways by an angled circulation hit.

Locations of the mintmarks are different, so they are different dies. It looks like the design that year. It is on all mints on the space between the L and I on Liberty.

I don't have a lot to work with on the OP's pics but it sure looks further away than normal. Here is a pic from PCGS and the op.
