I should have been on this thread long ago too! Well, here I am. Not the greatest detailed pic of me. This was me last year prospecting for gold on the North fork of the Yuba River in Northern California.

Hey Vermontensium..any luck up there with your sluice? My daughter and I went panning on the American River, she found flakes, I found pyrite. I've always wanted to try a sluice box.

Just some flakes on this trip. The sluice moves material pretty well. Mine is a smaller sluice. I know Keene makes a very nice larger one that you can put buckets through pretty rapidly. They sell black small rubber "riffles" that you silicone down at the beginning of the sluice so that any flakes get "trapped" right there as you are putting gravel in. As you know, gold is heavy so the gravel washes out in a minute or so leaving just gold visible. You will see the flakes right away. That's how I determine if an area is productive. If I don't see gold in a few buckets, I move on. I try to get under boulders or move them and get the gravel underneath. Try the banks too. I have found them productive as well. I found a pretty nice nugget w/quartz here a few years back with my detector in a crevice. I'll have to put some pics up. Good luck!

If you really want to see what a genuine North Dakotan looks like, here's one: Taken last September while on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Ken
