I get a lot of questions about purchasing a safe for coin and currency storage.

where you purchase your Safe and What safe you purchase is up to you.

Many of the requests I get are from the Northeast US.

For those of you in the Tri-state area- Here is the best place I could find that can offer you small to Large safes with the ability to consult with you about what you need and if necessary install them for you.

My safe came for free.
My dad made a safe for me, more than 50 years ago. Even as a teenager, I had a significantly valuable coin collection
The safe is quite small, well hidden under a pile of junk. It good for a few important documents and only the most valuable hundred or so coins in my collection.
Nevertheless, it weighs well over 100 kilograms, because it is made from very thick plate steel, and internally bolted to the floor.

If you are going to buy an 'off the shelf' model, by definition, it will be portable. Such a safe should be very securely attached to the house structure.

The smaller the safe, the easier it will be to conceal.

I think that a cylindrical floor safe embedded in a concrete ground floor is a good approach to safekeeping. Such a safe can be conveniently hidden under carpet tiles, or under floor inside a wardrobe. Best if you are considering new house construction, and installed in a bedroom.

Gun safes can be quite OK for larger coin collections, but I have never felt the need to own a firearm.

I have a safe that holds 40 guns its big and heavy, water tight and bolted down to the floor. Oh I don't own any guns, but if someone see's it they think I do.

No safe will stop a determined thief if they have enough time. Rather, it's the random burglar that is most likely to snag your precious treasure. I use a gun safe bolted to the wall in a closet.

I'd like to put one of those vault doors on my walk-in closet.

Here is a link to a great video on buying safes I posted a few years ago. Worthy of a watch if you are in the market.

Having a fireproof safe (high temp for a moderate period of time) gives me peace of mind. When the decision was made, I picked the heaviest / biggest safe I could find knowing I would only move it the one time and bolted it to the basement floor. It can be had but would take an extraordinary effort ... one my neighbors would recognize ... I hope :) Happy with my decision.

Floor safes are a great option for a smaller collection. My uncle had one that he cemented into place. It wasn't coming out without a jackhammer!

The drawbacks:
- you'll most likely need to cut into your slab
- the internal volume is relatively small
- you probably won't be able to take it with you if you move
