here is what it looks like today. it looks a touch better in hand. those pinkish high points can be brought back to brown with some time and patience.

@ colonialjohn - we had a bit of discussion about ultrasonic cleaning earlier in this thread. the discussion didnt go too far since I dont have a good ultra sonic cleaner so it wasnt a method I was planning to practice here. one of my concerns with that tool was that the debris from the coin could potentially abrade the surface. what are your thoughts on that? is it a concern? thanks!

i took a couple of nice photos of this coin the other day.

A-New-Coin-Cleaning-Project.-1803-Large-Cent
A-New-Coin-Cleaning-Project.-1803-Large-Cent

the color is starting to look pretty nice. there are still some problem spots that are proving rather difficult. specifically the area around LIB in LIBerty, the 3 in the date and S OF from stateS OF on the reverse.

still poking, touching and leaving it exposed to a reactive environment. I have not put any chemicals on it in a while.

at this point I think its getting into the range of - I have seen worst in strait graded holders - so to me this is already a resounding success. if my goal was to flip it for profit I would be pretty close to calling it a day. id treat the surface with blue ribbon and auction while it mentioning that it had been cleaned/recolored in the description.

i picked this one up for practice/educational purposes. I'm going to push it and see how nice I can get it.

im still somewhere around 3 maybe 3.5 hours of dedicated work time on this coin.

Can you describe what "push it" means to you...and what you still need to do...?

push it might have been a poor choice of words. ill try and rephrase.

i doubt this coin can ever be a choice coin. if its always going to be a problem coin then there are diminishing returns to addressing small issues. in this case I'm going to keep picking at the small issues to see what is possible.

ill enlist some help to take some pictures of me while I'm working on it the next time I get out the microscope. I think that will be useful for talking about what I'm doing to address those small areas.

Been a coin enthusiast since the late 50's. Started as a young boy and my entire life I have never cleaned a single coin. That was probably the first rule I learned. Thanks to this thread, I have changed my position. Alpha33 out...................
