I have just returned to collecting UK coins (mainly pennies and farthings at the moment) and the only reference I have is 2000 Spink standard catalog of British coins: coins of England. definitely out of date and the reference pictures of varieties and grading stink..anything out there that is more up to date and better illustrations? Quicksilver help !!

Spink is the catalogue I use for my British coins, I have a slightly newer edition. It doesn't have pics of every coin though.

Another good one if you are only going back a couple of hundred years and don't need the gold coins is published by Rotographic, called Collector's Coins of Great Britain. The 2009 edition is out now and has been improved over previous editions.

In the UK Spink is the 'bible'.
The 2009 edition is a marvelous edition to any library.

Check out Amazon.

I too use the Rotographic edition. Mine is 2007 but as Quicksilver said the 2009 version is out. It's a great book for UK coins. It only covers 1797-1970 but that is all I need and I think the new book covers up to 2007. Here is a link:

They take Paypal which is convenient for U.S. buyers.
