I haven't been able to identify this medal and am hoping someone can assist. It's 40 mm, and 17 grams. I think it's a German sporting medal of some sort. Maybe a race or something.

Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Yes looks like a third place medal for a 3000 meter race. I believe that it was designed by the medalist Joseph Christebauer. Are there any marks on the edge?
