Nice arc there too. Seems THIS finning error is Larger % wise for you, Then on Your USMC example, No ? In total % of area it covers. Can you take another picture of the reedless edge on the ARMY medal, Thanks

Why do the Edges have Some Heavy gouges and Some Very Minute Scraps Some small scratches and Everything in between.... Mis Aligned Dies, Worn collar, Both. Or Testing Extreme pressures as they go along to adjust the pressure to the metal flow ?

So are these finning issues on the 2.5 oz medals an indication of:

Dies / press out of calibration
Bad planchet stock
Poor / Non-existent QC by the Mint
Other ?

Thanks

Cptbilly, I am leaning to the Mis-Aligned die and Or Pressure calibration Adjustments upon striking... IMO.

Checked out my ARMY 2.5 ounce medal, It has finning as does Dearborn's example. It is finned approx 180 degrees around Seeing the Finning on this and a Few others I am going to say, The mint is testing the striking pressure of the Medals, LIBERTY medal, Military Medals Too.I am seeing less Edge Friction on the ARMY medal.... It has to be the manner in which the die is aligning and or the Pressure forcing the dies down a worn collar ? I have Not seen this happening on the ONE ounce PRESIDENTIAL Medals yet. Must Check them out Too..... EDIT, I am finding the capsule is Also unable to close properly because of the Finning Error

I still need to check my Air Force and Coast Guard medals, But I'm a bit laid up, I injured my back quite badly (yard work will get ya one way or another) I have a hard time even reaching my feet to put shoes on. ugg. BUT I'm still making it to work and hiding the pain.. (Carrying 8 foot ladders up 2 flights of stairs was a challenge though).

Well, my Air Force medal is normal - no fin, but my Coast Guard has a much smaller one but it is centered at about K9. I'm not going to bother with photos on the Coast medal.

Dearborn, hope you are feeling better. Last month I was replacing one of my security cameras outside, missed the last step on the ladder, fell, broke my nose. As an old guy I need to be more careful!

I sent an email to the US Mint last year complaining about the finning on my 2022 silver Liberty medal. I got a standard nothing specific response....sorry you are not happy with the product. I kept the medal. I assume they are aware of the finning problems but haven't or don't want to release a press statement about it.

@Living:
Never said that I didn't like my medals - I love these units - I'm keeping mine - When I have them all I'll build a nice display case.
