Hello! I'm trying to identify some of my Greek coins and any idea is very welcome. Thank you for your help! Diameter 24x25mm, Weight 11.1g, Bronze I tried a lot to identify it but I am not sure if is Apollo or someone else who is seating. From the letters to the right I manage to read (...)ΙΓ(Ι)ΝΩΝ There is also a large Π to the left

Well you have to think you are looking at Apollo leaning on a bow sitting on an omphalos, and your letters go straight down behind plus you have dotted borders. Puts me in the Seleukid Kingdom. Now do you see the full omphalos? No, but that gap between when a bow usually is and that omphalos is there clear enough, the tilted down head. That is enough for me to stop thinking about if I can enhance the omphalos etc. I would not be too married to the Π either, there are many combinations of letters and things that can make that or a monogram. A "T" that fades away on the top left, etc. You got a size and a Seleukid bronze to search that may just not be on acsearch and move to the bust and who it resembles perhaps. (If anything I said is correct of course.)

Louis, Omphalos is not clear to see but is a realistic option. Seleukid was my first thought but I couldn't read ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ in any possible way. All samples of Seleukid I have seen they have ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ at the right side, but not in my coin, I have a clear ...ΝΩΝ, so I step out from Seleukid. The bust it points to Seleukid, Apollo, Omphalos and dotted border also... the major problem is the letters (also is coming from a lot with many coins from Sicily). I will keep searching to see if I can find anything similar or let is as uncertain with a mention to be a possible Seleukid. Thank you once again for your kind reply and help Louis!!!

Looking again the coin... The Apollo on obverse, the Π, the dotted border and the ...ΝΩΝ, the diameter and weight... It will not surprise me to be a very rare, maybe unknown, type of Mamertini, Sicily.

OK, but your Mamertini don't really have letters that go straight down, they curve mostly. So if the Seleukids are out and you throw out the Omphalos, also be willing to throw out the Π that is probably limiting options and start a search for cities that do have letters that go straight down and are that size. There are really not that many cities that have letters going straight.

Thank you again Louis, for all your help and thoughts. Yes I noticed the curving on the Mamertini letters. You know we have a little of Seleukid and a little of Mamertini :) It's a hard coin to work with because I can't see the first letters so I can direct the search and as you said the options are limited. I can't be sure so I kept it as uncertain with a mention to Mamertini and Seleukid. Thank you once again!!

Louis, I get your point, but I just don't want to force an identification on something that probably isn't, there's a lot of doubt in the middle and I can't name it as long I am not sure. Thank you so much once again for all your kind help on this coin!

Bob L and I end our semesters soon. I'd love to work on this one this summer so if you get bored, might you consider posting some odd angle photos of the coin? Love to try some photo shop work on the images and try to pull things out. Only if you have the time of course.
