Tonight I decided to pour a Yuengling and tackle the pile of ~40 LWC from 1944. All of the varieties seem to be from Denver, and I only had 4 D mint marks in the tube. As I was looking through the scope, I was immediately reminded of Tropical Bats' comment about elf boot E's on the WE indicating a doubled die. http://goccf.com/t/448254       https://www.doubleddie.com/710334.htmlhttp://www.varietyvista.com/01a%20L...4DDDO001.htmI can't validate with the die crack behind Lincoln's ear due to wear. But putting this penny on the screen side-by-side with VV and Wexler, I see a lot of similarities: The fat 9 in 1944. The weird little slanted base on the two 4s. The bottom left hook on the I in Liberty. The thickness in B, E in Liberty and the bottom left hook. The weird truncated right crossbar on the T in Liberty. The elf hook E in We. The stunted T crossbar in Trust. The bulbous slanted leg in R of Trust. The puffy bottom of U in Trust. The slightly crooked D mint mark in the correct position (very visible on WDDO-001 especially). So, is this in fact 1944-D FS-101? |

i just spent an half hour or so parsing through your images between VV and Wexler`s until I got dizzy lol. But I see one feature after the next come together for a match so WTG Brandmeister.  |

Dutch-Tigger, thanks for investing so much time to evaluate the images! It took me quite a while, too. This is only the second variety that I have ever identified, so it was a real challenge. The mint mark really threw me. Wexler is spot on, but VV seems like a different angle or something. I hope Pop Latz is looking down, getting a smile out of this. The Wheat penny was from a little envelope of circulation culls. He gave it to me when I was around twelve years old. It has been in a coin box, untouched for 35 years. Quite the find, for something that cost him a penny and some patience, a rather long time ago. |

Brandmeister - Are you putting a loupe or XX lense filter under your scope to get those super close-ups? Great details, never thought of that but have a whole pile of filters to try now :-)

My light source is a common LED bar flashlight with a tissue wrapped around it. Although I have found that indirect sunlight is much better for accurately representing color. I'm at work and can't be sure with a quick look, but of note the two dies that are quite similar are DDO-001 (WDDO-001) and WDDO-025.
