I have an Sacagawea coin ($1.00) and there is no date or mint mark on the coin no markings on the rim surrounding the coin. There are several initials, obverse G G, reverse C L V and T C. The motto is similar to another Sacagawea dollar (Great Law Of Peace) The great tree of peace was the motto for the 2010 coin. What could this coin be an medal or a prototype coin or possibly a private minted coin? I have attached photographs for examination and advice.

Thank you

I did research online and it said that the date and mint mark should be on the edge of the coin. It's called edge lettering.

Quote:
After 8 years of the Sacagawea dollars, the United States Mint began to try new designs. Thus, came the Native American dollar Coins. One thing that you can note about the new designs is that there is no longer a date or a mint mark visible on the dollar. Instead, the date and mint mark appear on the edge.

sharons25,
The edge should be dated and lettered, but sometimes it wears off from being circulated.

PCGS shows a "weak and a "partial" edge lettering variety for 2010 but there's no write up and I have no idea how they can tell it from wear. I recall that there was a dealer in cahoots with a mint employee to remove coins from production before they got the edge lettering in order to create their own variety but I don't recall what year(s) that was.

Happy this is a civil conversation, given the edgy nature of the topic. Okay, okay....it's Friday.
