Hi there:

I am new to this forum. I found this coin in some old records. Can't see how my grandfather would come across an ancient coin. Is this coin real. If so, what is it? Thank you.

@el, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please get us the diameter and weight to 0.1 g or better? Also, on your second picture, the edge looks to be colored more grey than brown. Is that the case, or is it just from your lighting? If possible, please post an edge shot in that location. I know it will be hard to get a good focus, so please jsut do your best. Thx.

Thank you. The coin is 12 grams and 2.29 cm in diameter, and here is the side view. Regards,

It looks like a Nero Caesar, billon tetradrachm, eagle, Alexandria, Egypt. Looks genuine to me but I am not an expert. There are ancient fakes and modern replicas made for the tourist trade.

If genuine, value of any coin depends on condition, rarity and collector demand. This coin type is not rare. You could check out vcoins.com, acsearch.info and ebay current and sold listings for comparisons, use the search lines, type in Nero eagle Alexandria, Egypt. A quick look shows this coin type in very worn condition has sold for around $25-$30, but in great condition like nearly uncirculated they can sell for $200+. IMO yours is in Fine to Very Fine condition.

Billon tetradrachms are not 100% silver, they are a debased coin with mix of silver and other metals.

If you live near/in a city there may be a coin store or coin club with an ancient coin collector near you who could give you an opinion.

Looks authentic to me too. Nice coin.

If the link below works, you can see what a number of these sold for. Be sure to click on each heading (The Coin Shop, eAuctions, etc.) near the top to scan through all listings.

I received this from a friend. Any comments:

This is a billon (25% or less silver tetradrachm struck at Alexandria for use in Egypt. The obverse inscription is not quite in focus, but I surmise it is a coin of Gallienus struck in regnal year 11 (given on reverse before the eagle. IA = 11. The symbol L is abbreviation of Greek etous = of year.
Reign of Gallienus is 253-268.
The radiate crown was in use on certain denominations from the reign of Nero (54-68). It is the standard crown on the silver antoninianus or double denarius introduced in 215. The antoniniani drove denarii out of circulation after 238. Provincial & civic coins of the period often adopted the radiate portrait.

Your friend is wrong...your coin has already been identified as Nero. Gallienus issues from Alexandria were not radiate, but laureate. The Gallienus obverse on Alexandrian coinage is also a full bust, for example, showing drapery and cuirass; while your Nero example is a radiate head only. Below is a Gallienus for comparison.

I edited this to add that there is no need to talk about the antoninianus or denarius as Egypt used a different monetary system based on Greek currency until circa A.D. 295- 296.
