The question:

Quote:
Why is there a gap between the 1928 Hawaiian (European) Discovery Sesquicentennial and the Texas Independence Centennial and Maryland Tercentenary issues of 1934?

While it's not possible to state unequivocally that the weakened US economy of the time did not contribute to the lack of new US commemorative coin issues, its role, if any, was a minor one.

The gap was driven largely by the April 1930 veto issued by US President Herbert Hoover regarding the proposed Gadsden Purchase 75th Anniversary half dollar. The Treasury Department had been raising objections regarding new commemorative coins for years, but Congress had generally ignored its objections and approved multiple new commemorative coin bills. With Hoover's veto, however - essentially a reiteration of the Treasury's objections - commemorative coin proposals were not looked upon with favor in Congress.

It was not a case of no new commemorative coin proposals being introduced in Congress (check out my What If? series for the time frame via: Commems Collection), but rather a case of some sponsors withdrawing their coin requests, others switching to a request for a commemorative medal vs. coin, and others seeing their proposals fail to gain traction in the House or Senate Committees that reviewed coinage proposals.

The "long arm" of the veto is to blame for the coin series gap far more than economic factors.

No doubt, but once the floodgates were opened...

Then as collectors we entered what I call the Commemorative Craze era whereby an astonishing majority of the classic commemorative were issued in just a few short years 1934-1939.

I enjoy all of them as a current collector - and am very thankful to researchers such as commems who bring to life the stories of their origins and twists of fate on the legislative road to approval.

I look forward to commems posts every day because they are always incredibly well researched and documented, and greatly enrich my education regarding this branch of numismatics. Additionally, commems' coins are glorious examples which I can only dream of owning.
Were I asked to name my favorite contributor to the CCF, commems would win by a wide margin.

And many CCF members heartily agree with you. @commems is simply an amazing numismatic scholar with a tremendous writing style. A true gem that we all share.

Stay tuned for a few more days for an update on a CCF honor that was bestowed upon commems.
