Lot DescriptionVery Rare and Charming Largesse Gold KlippeDENMARK. The King's Anointment Gold Medal, ND (1671). Copenhagen Mint. Christian V. NGC MS-62.
Galster-200; JS-489; Lange-77; Bruun-15425a. Weight: 20.09 gms. Rhombic: 38 mm. Excessively rare, very charming, and in exquisite near-Choice Mint State, perfectly centered and superbly lustrous.
The shape, the overall design, and not least the fact that the reverse bears the initials of the Copenhagen mintmaster, Gottfred Kruger, indicate that this medal, which is normally just met with in silver, was struck as largesse money for the celebration of the king's anointment on June 7th, 1671. The few gold pieces minted were probably intended as gifts for royalty and other dignitaries attending the ceremony.
Above the king's portrait, the Tetragrammaton (the Hebrew four-letter-name of God) is casting light on the absolute monarch.
Estimate: €16,000 - €18,000.
