Quote: Somaliland coin has palm fronds vs. feathers. My bad. Well at least they both begin with "F". Also, I thought my Indian Head penny post was the first one. Think I need a nap!

1937 Roanoke Colony Memorial Half Dollar The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh, the sponsor of the attempt to establish a colony at Roanoke, with ornate, ruffled collar and a feather in his hat - Quite dashing! The reverse portrays Eleanor Dare cradling the infant Virginia in her arms. The coin was designed by William Marks Simpson. As Keith12 has already presented what appears to be a very nice mint state coin, I figured I'd go a different direction and present the only circulated commemorative half dollar in my collection - an acquisition from nickelsearcher a number of years ago.

A double-dip for a Sunday! 1938 New Rochelle, NY 250th Anniversary The 1938 New Rochelle, NY 250th Anniversary Half Dollar celebrates the anniversary of the town's settlement. On the obverse, Lord Pell is wearing a stylish hat featuring a large feather decoration. Lord Pell is depicted receiving the annual payment of a "fatted calfe" from the residents of New Rochelle (the calf was part of the town's land purchase agreement with Pell). For other of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, including more on each of the US commemorative coins I've posted in this thread, see: Commems Collection.

We've shown the original, now it's time to present the modern "replica"! 2001 American Buffalo Silver Dollar James Earle Fraser's original design for the 1913-38 Indian Head/Buffalo/Bison Five Cent coin was resurrected for the 2001 American Buffalo commemorative silver dollar to raise funds for the National Museum of the American Indian. The feather is on the obverse. For a look at the Coin and Currency Set for this silver dollar, check out: - 2001 American Buffalo Coin And Currency Set
