Seeing these coins almost every day since I was a young child, the novelty has rather worn off. But when I first saw the British decimal 10p with the lion wearing a crown, I thought it looked rather silly and unnatural. We'd had crowned lions on our coins before, but they'd always been very formal and heraldic. Ironside's lion was almost naturalistic but was wearing a crown - perhaps to show he was King of the Jungle! The 5 pence coin design introduced in 1968 was also a bit strange - surely the crown would just crush the thistle?
