Do any Canadians have any experience with Heritage Auctions in the US? Did everything go smoothly? Did they accept your Canadian credit card? How was shipping and taxes?
I was reading through their terms and conditions but found very little mention of bidders from outside the USA.
I'm considering bidding on something but wanted to get some feedback first.

Heritage is very quick auction but you must really want the item and bid to win atittude only, the juice and exchange, HST and shipping is roughly 70% of the winning bid as a final cost for a Canadian. They only use Fed EX or UPS to ship no issues but you are stuck with HST and broker fees, save some credit card fees as they charge 2 to 3 % for foreign exchange on top of the rate, get a US bank draft and good luck !

If there's any way you can ship to a US address it makes a big difference.  to the CCF! Edited by Coinfrog

Yep that exchange rate is high right now 40%, so $100 is $140

Even a US postal box or similar still have the problem of getting the units back to Canada, if caught the CCBS fines are wicked after paying so much at the auction already another 13% plus broker fees will seem cheap, well sort of, most or lots of Canada coolest stuff ends up at Heritage most eyeballs

Thanks for all the info! I plan on bidding based on all these factors including buyer fees, credit card fees, credit card exchange rates, shipping, taxes, and brokerage. I'm not very confident I'll win but there's no harm in trying  |

If this doesn't deter you then also consider the fact that customs will flag your win (guaranteed) & future purchases could be flagged. FedEx also charges you a surcharge for paying your duty. I have had much better experiences (paid less buyer's premium/service charges) with World Banknote Auctions: https://www.worldbanknoteauctions.com/(The present & future of online auctions IMO) They also have an auction today (US currency I believe) Edited by walk2dwater

After my 2020 HA win, I paid duty on most items that came in from the US for about a year.... The same phenomenon occurred after I bought something from Banknote World on ebay. Up to you... but just sayin.... |

For future reference, "Buying as a Canadian from Heritage Auctions" might have been a more specific title. Some folks here might have information to share, but they saw the title and figured it was just another HA-bashing thread and skipped over it.
The advice you have upthread is good. You must always include the buyer's fee and shipping/handling in your total cost to determine what to bid. Foreign exchange fees, the strength/weakness of the CAD/USD, HST, and customs fees are unique to non-US buyers and can be substantial.
Unfortunately, that puts you at a disadvantage. Say the coin is worth US$1,000 to both of us. I just blackout $25 for shipping and the buyer's fee and might bid $850. Your bid of say $750 will lose.
I face some of the same problems buying from European auctions denominated in Euros.

So the simple way for bidding on Heritage is closer to add 80% to winning bid and that will be your delivered price, 200.00 winning bid will become 360.00 Canadian all in,again good luck !
