This is the time of year when coin grading services offer deals on certifying coins. I have sent coins in several times. What does the community think about when and what to certify? As a rule of thumb, I always prefer buying a certified coin when I am spending more for a key date. But, my question goes beyond that. When should a common less expensive coin be certified? Is the additional expense justified?

I generally don't certify anything worth less than around $300.

Welcome! There are tons of discussions about this everywhere on forums. People seem to repeat $150 as a minimum value to justify TPG grading, strictly from a financial standpoint. To me that depends on your goals and the service you pick. ANACS for example currently has their special 10 US coins under $500 value (each I assume) for $129. You could submit at a show and let's say $50 for return shipping and you're in for about $18 per coin. So in that case the "$150 minimum" threshold could be a lot lower. Others will only want to maximize resale value and insist that you have to pick PCGS because "they sell for more", but if course you'll have to pay a lot more.

You could also be wanting to slab for sentimental reasons, to preserve coins that have more personal value to you than their market value. Or maybe you want a complete set of something all in the same slabs for aesthetic reasons, but the value of an individual coin doesn't meet your threshold. Or to get a bulk deal you need to toss in a few coins that wouldn't merit slabbing on their own. Others will point out factors that I'm forgetting.

What goal do you have in mind for slabbing?

Justification is subjective.... perhaps something commemorative or sentimental.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it. I am all over the place on this subject. That is the reason for my post. I have some that would be on the borderline of value justification and others (such as Morgans) I have many slabbed and would like to see all of them that way.
