He may have access to a few IP addresses

He has access to 2 less than he had now.

It's not always as easy as that though. ISP's like AOL use proxy IP's that may encompass 3 states, so if you ban one of those IP's for one problem user, you may ban 50 members. Also some dialup ISP's use IP's that can change as frequent as every page load, but usually at least every time they dialup.

He's at it again.

As for the bidders, what can we say?

Plenty of greed, not much brains.

"This coin is in great condition. I found it a couple of years ago and thought that it was real! I had to take it to a coin dealer to get an expert opinion!"

I think he posted on here in the first place to bait us!

How did you guys figure out that he was that possum guy?

I AM IMPRESSED!

But it says fake? am I missing something? People pay this kind of money for "real fake" coins?

wrk4lvg - I'm with you. I can not believe the prices such an obvious altered original gets. I am a counterfeit collector and I think I have a feel for the actual rarity and value of forgeries but this one is beyond me.

All that said - I hear what earlier writers have said. It is a KEY rarity that you can't buy for 10 times this amount, but that said what is the actual limit on the number of such alterations that COULD be made? There were millions of Pennies made between 1911 and 1936 which could be turned into a 1930 by an expert forger.

So why pay so darned much?

I simply don't get it. The work required is actually worth about $10 if you pay for the time to do it and the host coin could be purchased for under $10 as well - so $20 TOPS is the limit as I see it.

If I am missing something here I would love to know what that is.

pattiewhack - Sounds like a business opportunity for an enterprising engraver. Even when coins are admitted to be fakes - they sell for far more than the production costs. This would also be legal under US laws since alterations done without the intent to defraud are perfectly legal here. Does anyone know what the law says in Australia? Would importing admitted alterations be legal?

This is his latest listing:

The thing is, contrary to what mattski2003 believes, it is not a good reproduction at all. (And it is a reproduction, not an altered date). It says fake all over it: The obverse is very different, while parts of the reverse just don't come off right. It annoys me that so many people can get tricked into thinking it's the genuine article, and it exasperates me that people would bid big dollars on it on the off chance that it might be real (I am referring to this guy's previous misleading auctions, now)! Greed and lack of knowledge are a very bad mix... Either that, or people have money to burn...
