Sap - Thanks for the information. I was generally aware of the history of dated coins that you describe but your summary is a very helpful one with the key details covered.

Quote:
This one is date by symbols and graphics.
1280 King Edward I

Dearborn - Can you explain how the symbols and graphics give the date?

As far as AD dates written in European numerals go, my oldest is 1517, a silver zweier (2 pfennig) from Salzburg.

(This coin is uniface - there is nothing on the other side except a faint inverse impression. This makes it look a little bit like a brockage, but it was intended to be minted that way.)

I believe my oldest coin with a date in any system is this Seleukid AE (probably this type) from the reign of Antiochus VII (Euergetes Sidetes, 138-129 BC), dated 174 in the Seleukid era = 139/8 BC (so specifically 138 BC, to match the reign period).

Unfortunately the date isn't very legible on the photos; it should be ΔΟΡ (for 174) on the bottom of the first pic.

EDIT: forgot to mention - @Finn70, it's 1496 day today in How Far Back Can We Go 7th edition, so you can post your gorgeous gulden in there!
And I'm looking forward to seeing more of your coins in the 8th edition after it starts.

Ah, OK, so it's not really a "dated" coin, but one that can be narrowed down to a specific date.

Here is a (bad) picture of the 1567 English coin that I had until 1982 or so. It looks similar in design to NumisRob's 1562 sixpence. I don't know the denomination, but from what I can tell (by comparing it to other coins in the same picture) I'm going to guess it was around the size of a quarter. (Any help in determining the denomination would be appreciated.)

I had several pictures of my coin collection taken by a friend in December 1981, for some now long-forgotten school project. For this picture I put together a group of 7 silver coins I had, from the 14th thru 18th centuries. (I had recently gone to my first and only coin show and bought at least some of the coins there.)

There were 2 pictures of the same group of coins, one with obverses and one with reverses, but for some reason I didn't turn this particular coin over; thus I just have 2 pictures of the reverse. I guess I thought the 1567 date was so cool that I wanted to see it twice?
