Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to open air-tite capsules. I have tried a butter knife, and a small flat head screw driver, but those were both too thick Then I tried a razor blade and it, like the other tools, slipped and I nearly cut my finger off. Thankfully no stitches were needed.

Does anyone know of another way to do this? I'm having this problem with both empty air-tites and opening an air-tite to take a coin out I normally wouldn't want to remove coins from their capsules except to get a picture of the coin Although I think pictures of the coins in the air-tites look fine. All commemorative coins come in air-tites, ugh.

As I mentioned above I'm also having trouble getting empty air-tites open to put new coins in.

I'm going crazy here

I use a razor blade from a carpet cutting utility knife - put it in the seem and pry up slowly then work your way around it. Once you can get your finger nails in the opened seem then you can just pull it apart.

EDIT: Spelling errors

I use a pocket knife, slowly work my way around the capsule seam several times pry up slightly as I go. Don't force it, take your time. Gradually it will come loose.

I use recycled ex British Royal Mint positive screw seal capsules for my most valuable coins.
Opening? - just unscrew.

The capsules are housed in recycled individual ex British Royal Mint snap shut coin cases. Together, they make a nice display, as well as providing the best protection.
The empty capsules and cases were originally used for proof silver or gold coins, and were sold to me cheap by my LCS.

ok maybe a bit over kill - I use a eye glass repair kit screwdriver to get it started then on to a small screwdriver to slowly pry open the airtight.

my finger nails work the best, no damage to the capsule like when I tried a knife
