I went to the local Coinstar (at Fred Meyer) to dump my pennies today, and noticed that they had increased the no-fee Amazon gift card to 5%! They also sneakily moved Amazon from the last spot (on page 3) to the first spot (on page 1). This must've been a very recent change. Has anyone else noticed it, or is it local to my area? Alas, this probably means that I will no longer be doing pennies much, if other Coinstar locations are the same way now. I'll try to switch to nickels and maybe others. We will see. But man, this sucks. Does anyone know what may have happened? Did their contract negotiation with Amazon break down? Did they just want to make more money (to cover costs)? Did I dump too many pennies? Cheers!

Sad, use them regularly to get rid of piles of change in return for those Amazon cards.

From Coinstar website: Amazon.comŽ is the place to find and discover anything you want to buy online at a great place. Our huge selection includes products in Books, Electronics, Music, DVD, Video, Camera & Photo, Software, Computer & Video Games, Kitchen & Housewares, Bed & Bath, Outdoor Living, Tools & Hardware, Wireless, and more. At Amazon.com it's easy to find what you're looking for! Transaction Fee: Up to 7% | Minimum amount: $5.00. | Maximum amount: $1,000. The last time I dumped change there for an Amazon card there was no fee. This was several months ago. Since it says up to 7% I guess each place can set their own rate

Bummer. I guess it helps to check out the other machines in the area.

In my area, I believe the change went into effect on May 1. When I dumped my pennies on 4/28, there was still no fee. But when I tried it this past weekend, there was a 5% fee. So the price hike must've happened sometime in between, likely May 1. I haven't checked the other Coinstar locations yet in my area, but will report back when I do.
For me, it's just so much easier to just dump the pennies into the Coinstar vs. taking the time to roll everything back up, which takes a LONG time.
Cheers!

I never used Coinstar but my bank had a counting machine which was free for customers. I knew exactly how much change I brought and was not too happy when the machine shorted me like $60. Banks in my area have since done away with coin counting machines.
To make wrapping much faster, I picked up cheap counting tubes which made re-wrapping coins like 10x faster. Now the trick is to get wrappers any time I visit the bank.

Yesterday dumped $80.00 of nickels at Winn-Dixie and there was no charge for Amazon e-coupon.
