Great contributions, Spence, Dearborn, bd251, and Keith67!

Here is my tiny Merovingian denier. Like many Merovingians hard to attribute with any precision.

Denier, Frankish kingdom, ca 700-751, Arvernis (modern Clermont-Ferrand). 0.65 g, 10 mm.

Obverse: Horse with rider.
Reverse: AR (retrograde).

Here is a second Merovingien Denier from around the same time period. Mine features crosses and a six-pointed star.

GREAT IDEA for a thread, and already quite a few lovely examples and a treat to see a few Merovingians!

I've got nothing this early to show, then just one Carolingian, but quite a bit from the mid-10th c., most of which I doubt will overlap much with others (except Bohemia and a couple of abbey/episcopal issues which I know spence also has),
... so maybe I will wait a bit.

Ah, I see we are not following a time schedule.

But first ... @keith are there more details on your HRE denar? Where in HRE is it from (like, an abbey or bishopric in Germany or Austria?). The two portraits are interesting, especially the one with a cross and sword, which looks like it bears the tonsure of a cleric. VERY cool coin (but I'd like to understand who the two figures are).

So, here is an early denar of the Bishopric of Metz, struck under Bishop Theoderic (theirry) I and in the name of one of the emperors Otto, 964-984, Dannenberg 13 (for a great summary of the history of this place, go to erafjel's Liard thread, http://goccf.com/t/462880 page 4). The general design of the coin is a type that was used across the "Germanic" world in the 10th - 12th centuries, based I think on the design of the earlier Carolingian "temple deniers." Obverse, we can read most of the legend starting from 6:00 which is something like DEODERIS EPS MET. Reverse something like + IMPRTOR OTTO (Otto in the quadrants of the cross).

Correct. That is how my collection is organized though, so I'm planning to largely go in chronological order. Next up for me is this Denier from the French City State of Melle, that dates to 840 to 877 AD. It was minted at Potiers on behalf of Charles the Bald.

And here is a related denier, struck by his brother Lothair I c. 840-855 in the Kingdom of Middle Francia, just to the east. The mint is not known, but could be anywhere from Lyon, France to Dorestad, Netherlands as there were several mints operating in this part of the Carolingian empire that covered a broad swath along the Rhine (mostly on the west). Morrison 580.

I read the obverse legend as + LVThIARIVS IMP
and reverse as XPISTIAHA RELCO

Good work @tdz! This Carolingian Denier is a bit later (end of the 9th Century, struck in Limoges on behalf of King Odo):
