Quote: it is more what they are called than what they contain. Thanks for the clarification. Indeed, those Sicilian denari that spence and I have posted contain as little as 0.025 grams of silver! While I guess the English penny remained over a gram for quite a long time. So the worth of a "penny" really depended on where you were.

Here is a Austrian Pfennig minted in Vienna in the second half of the 13th Century. Much like one of my previous posts, one side is definitely more well defined than the other (that mess on the rev is a lion to the right with +OTA CHER along the periphery.

Thx guys. Here is a 13th Century Denier from the Duchy of Lorraine. As you can read from the obv incription (NAN CEI), it was minted at Nancy. The rev inscription (FERI) alludes to the fact that it was issued under Ferry III, Duke of Lorraine.

At 0.7 g and 18 mm, this small silver Noven from Castille and Leon seems like it fits the overall gestalt of this thread, so my apologies if it actually not what was intended. It can be narrowly dated to between 1252 and 1258 AD and was minted at Burgos.

Indeed that's a nice pair! I suppose "noven" just refers to a monetary change, cause the size seems right for a dinero. I fogot that I have a Hungarian denar from the 14th century to match my Polish coin of the same ruler, Louis (Lajos) of Anjou. I think this one is dated to around 1366:
