The date is all wrong. Wrong font, and it's too big.

Fake... very fake.

Definite fake; matches a previous example of a "Hobo Nickel" version previously listed on the Bay. The edge is a dead giveaway, as it should not be that sharp/ flat and machined like.

Both the seller and the Bay were notified; hopefully the sale blocked...

I actually asked the seller for the edge images...

The deciding factor for me had been the coin was 3mm short of the 39mm-40mm expected diameter.

That image doesn't really show the true diameter anyway, since the ruler doesn't align through the center of the coin -- it's too high, across her nose rather than her jaw. The seller should have used a caliper (or maybe set the coin on top of the ruler if one wasn't available).

Good that you passed/missed it anyway.

Again, thank you all for this insight.
I would have never been able to determine its legitimacy based on less obvious obverse/reverse details.

Would this forum/subforum be a good place to ask questions verifying legitimacy of coins? I also had a couple other coins (1840 Seated Liberty dollar, 1921 High Relief Peace dollar) I wanted to confirm as well..

Interesting that the counterfeiter cleaned up a lot of the bubbles on the counterfeit coin and added adjustment marks. It looks like the counterfeit die has had a lot of use. I will remember the hobo nickel fake the next time I come across it. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I'm glad you missed out on this one - even IF it were a real coin, I would not have bought it from this seller because of the way he handled the coin..

People can argue it till the cows come home but I'll always standby key date and semi key date coins either come NGC, PCGS, ANACS or they don't come at all around here.

I'll "argue" including ICG; one of the best authenticators in the business...
