I visited the numista page for this coin and found they have recently split the coin into 2 varieties: long and short trident prong. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11581.htmlObviously when they added the "long prong" variety they assigned everyone who'd marked they had this coin as having the "short prong" variety, making it look as if the "long prong" was rare: I dug out my pile of 2003 suffrage dollar coins to determine the real ratio of long to short prongs in circulation. The "long prong" variety is on the left and the "short prong" on the right: Of the 1642 coins I had, 513 had the "long" prong and 1129 had the "short" prong. That's 32% "long prong" and 68% "short prong" I also noted the "long prong" has thinner text on the reverse, so another way to tell which variety you have is to simply look at the As. P.S. Numista tags that trident as a "cold weapon" Edited by MachinMachinMan 07/02/2024 01:48 am

Nice work, MachinMachinMan! A "cold weapon"?

Interesting results. Quote: A "cold weapon"? As opposed to hot lead I assume.

I found a beautiful example of this in the till at work last week. Just about uncirculated. I was hoping it might be a long prong, as I have the short, but no, it is another short.

Of the 1642 coins I had ... Thanks for the interesting stats MachinMachinMan but I'm gobsmacked that you would have $1642 worth of 2003 $1 suffrage coins on hand to go through in the first place! A couple of questions that immediately come to mind are: Is there a reason to why you have kept so many of this particular coin? Do you also keep large numbers of other specific coins, and if you do, how do you go about storage?

Quote: Is there a reason to why you have kept so many of this particular coin? I've always liked the design of this coin. Quote: Do you also keep large numbers of other specific coins Yep. Better to put coins aside for a rainy day then to put them into the pokies. Quote: how do you go about storage? 1.7kg olive jars. (I suppose the next question will be how can I eat that many olives )

Quote: (I suppose the next question will be how can I eat that many olives ) ..... I'll play1. did you know that you needed 1.7kg storage for your coins before, or after you accumulated all of those $1 coins? 2. If you realized after accumulation, what did you store them in pre-accumulation?

Quote: (I suppose the next question will be how can I eat that many olives ) That's not my question - when I lived in Spain, our family of 5 easily got through 1 kg of olives every day. I don't think you can assume that those percentages reflect what's in the total population. It might be the case, that if you took $10,000 out of the bank, that you'd find more long prongs. It's great to see such good, detailed photos.

I love olives. I prefer Kalamata olives. I usually eat a jar of them a week. They help improve my LDL:HDL cholesterol ratio. Wait. Were we talking about olives or coins?
