I finally got around to opening a few boxes of grad school books I had shipped across country -- across the US, that is, from Oregon to New York -- back in the mid-1980's as part of a total household move. Among a handful of odd numismatic specimens, I came across these interesting items, late arrivals that I'd obviously packed in a hurry and then forgot about entirely for 38 years!

An empty velvet-lined case for a New Zealand Specimen Set in its original shipping box from The Treasury at Lambton Quay.

.and the letter that accompanied it explaining why the case was empty!

Can't recall if I ever received the "Polished Standard Specimen Coin Set." Was that something above and beyond a "mint set" of uncirculated coins?

I'm sure Princetane would give a more detailed answer but in his absence, I'll do my best. From 1967-1970 coins were issued each year as both an uncirculated standard set (Pink Label) and a polished specimen set (Blue Label). Both sets were issued in cellophane wrapping however punters could also purchase the blue label set with a swanky display case. I think the coins still came in the cellophane wrapping along with the case. 1967 was the first year of decimal coinage in NZ and no coins were issued in 1966. From 1967-1969 10 cent coins showed both the decimal and the pre-decimal value (1 shilling). Those were the days when they produced year sets in reasonable numbers so the price was fair (unlike today!). As a result, you can still pick up sets pretty cheap.

Thank you, David!
Now all I have to do is find the coins!
