A good friend of mine is moving away soon so he let me have these two late 18th century trading tokens cos he needed to "shrink" his collection a bit so he could get it in his car in one go. They were struck by Westwood for the Salop Woollen Manufactory, the dies being sunk by Hancock, who also worked for Matthew Boulton. The one dated 1793 has a bishop with a combing tool on one side and the Shrewsbury Town Arms on the other, and an edge inscription "PAYABLE ANGLESEY LONDON OR LIVERPOOL". The one dated 1794 has a woolpack rather than the bishop and a plain edge.

He's a good bloke. We're both in our seventies and spent a short time at the same secondary school. One of our common interests is the English "Black Country" - the heartland (if not the birthplace) of the Industrial Revolution, between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. This sparked my interest in all things Boulton and Watt, and the tokens area of my coin collecting... I could go on...&
