41 years I have sat on this. I took it out to check, and was surprised by the toning. My lincoln looks like it is turning silver on just his profile! I tried to catch a good picture but it doesn't quiet convey the color exactly. Is this a normal toning or is there something weird with the planchet. Also the 50 cent price toned beautifully on one side! I added the last picture just to give reference to the silver of the nickle vs the silver half. Do the original proof sets known to tone? Yes, proof sets can tone. The original packaging isn't airtight, hence, environmental agents can react with proof surfaces.

pretty nice proof set - too bad about the scratches on the case. But the coins look good.

¥eat, I got sad, the cover was lost about 15 years ago. I also gave an 82 set away.... (imma dummy) Also I DID think the case was airtight! Good to know it is not! ALSO! I GOT MY MICROSCOPE today and checking out that proof penny it seems to be a DDR, with the understrike toned blue under the microscope!! I am learning the new tech, as soon as I can I will get micro pics of what I believe to be blue toned(?) DDR layer and post them here soon!

Those look like very nice toners! They will continue to tone in those mint holders. I've "frozen" quite a few of those by removing them, a quick rinse with acetone and then into an airtite holder. You don't want toning running away from you. I've seen plenty of sets turn black (terminal corrosion) and be ruined.

At least there doesn't appear to be zinc rot on the Zincoln. Yet.
