Hello. I am new to this community and joined as I recently came into some old com s and notes, primarily UK but also Southern Irish coins. On checking through some of the collection there is an unusual coin which appears to be double struck although I'm not sure of the correct term or if it even has been double struck if that is the correct term. Would anyone have any knowledge of this? Many thanks

Something very odd going on there! Doesn't look double struck - you would expect evidence on both sides. Also all the detail looks very indistinct - almost as if someone was trying to make a copy using casting or foil, but got it all wrong. It doesn't look real to me. An accurate weight may give some more clues, also close ups of the edge in a few places. Is the metal the same as other pennies you have from that era?

Thanks jbuck for the welcome and thanks PaddyB for the thoughts. Unfortunately it is in a sealed unit, I had to cut the picture down in size as the file was too big to upload. Agree that's it's an oddity though.

I would agree with PaddyB - it sees to be some kind of cast copy, or perhaps an electrotype, but very poorly made.

An interesting find. Are you able to take the coin out of the "sealed unit"? The apparent indistinct detail in the image may just be caused by the (vacuum sealed?) plastic cover. PaddyB - there does appear to be evidence of a double strike on the obverse, check out the lower neck area and some of the writing is doubled (repeated "A" after "GRA" etc.)

Nothing wrong with the coin IMO its Double Struck but from the looks of it wasn't sitting in the collar correctly . Kind of like this ish should be lying flat [---] but was like this but a little less of an angle [ / ] 35 degrees-ish . I would expect it would be very sought after and wouldn't surprise me if it made £100 or more.

Thank you all for your considered replies. Not sure what will be done with the coin or if it will be kept as is
