Coin Roll Hunting Etiquette

So, did you enjoy the experience and are you satisfied with your return? Old-timers like me, who searched thousands of rolls in the '50s and '60s with many savers (imagine searching hundreds of bags of solid wheat cents), are always curious about today's worthy finds, which seem predictably few given the effort involved.

You can use them for purchases. There is a topic category on the blog for tracking and encouraging the use of half dollars (dollar coins a $2 bills). By doing so, they become less of a rarity in commerce and banking.

Keep Half Dollars circulating!

I held up to six different accounts for CRH. For separate pickup and dumps, in which I used a credit Union with a free counting machine, and another that accepted $500 bags of loose coin over the counter. They even supplied the bags.

Many banks will not give you coins if you don't have an account. Go back to those banks in 6 months. Managers and tellers are constantly turning-over. You might very well get lucky the second, especially with halves and dollars. Most banks I hit, want to get rid of halves and dollars. Just remember, don't bring them back to those banks.

Also, if you establish a relationship or rapport with any tellers; give them your name and number and ask them to call you when coins come in they want to get rid of. You might be surprised at the phone calls you will get.

Whenever you hit banks, always go with cash in your pocket.

Questions for you first? When you go to the bank for your rolls, do they give you machine wrapped rolls or customer wrapped rolls? What denomination rolls are you getting? What coins are you looking for?

I usually order boxes, but I always offer to take any extra coinage they want to get rid of. I have recently found that three of the bank/credit unions I purchase from have 3 different suppliers. One uses Brinks, another Loomis, and a third uses Garda.

The credit unions order coins less frequently than the banks, but I have good relationships with all of them and they keep me busy with boxes and customer rolls.

I do not mark my returns as my dump bank is a credit union with a free coin counter machine for members. I can punch in my account number and make a direct deposit with a receipt from the machine. The only time I have to get in the teller line is when I fill up one of the machine's bags (always annoys the tellers). We recently moved a CD to that credit union and I made sure to tell them their machine was one of the reasons.

Here's a funny story. One of the banks I buy from had ordered a couple of boxes of quarters for me and said they would be in on Wednesday. On that Wednesday I had been to my dump bank and noticed the Brinks truck at the bank I was expecting to get quarters from. I pulled in and went inside and they said she had not brought the coins in yet. I pulled up a chair and waited. Waited and waited. Finally the security guard came in and said, "No coinage today, she can't get the vault door open." Now that's secure! I came back the next Wednesday and got my 2 boxes of quarters, plus $700 in customer wrapped rolls that had just been dropped off. Timing is everything!

Last week I made one of my usual trips to the dump bank to deposit coins and stopped by my main credit union to deposit some checks. They said they had a couple of boxes of halves and dollars someone else had ordered but had not picked up. Did I want them? Well, of course. They will get more cookies next week. :)

Well we have something in common, several months ago I did get 100$ in half's. Found nothing, when I took them to my primary bank she took me to the coin counting room. A customer had just delivered $4,500 in lose halfs. She said he brings between 4,000 and 5,000 every other week. I noticed a lot had a black mark across the trust. She said he got most of those in Arkansas and Texas. Small world.
