PCGS - All 1836 Two Cent patterns share the same dies, later repolished for restrikes. This example is a restrike, showing die cracks and a plain edge. In PCGS PR64+RB, this piece shines with orange fields and brown details. Just two dozen are believed to be known, but only three are finer than this one. Do you have any Two Cent coins?

Auction Description
1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-54, Pollock-57, Low R.6, PR64+ Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. The obverse features a standing eagle facing right and perched on a cloud, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and date 1836 separated by two dots. The obverse die shows the A in STATES corrected from an E underneath. The reverse shows TWO / CENTS in arcs surrounded by an olive wreath, struck in copper with a plain edge. This is an attractive survivor of this pattern emission despite the presence of a trio of obverse die cracks, which, according to USPatterns.com, mark these as restrikes. Fiery orange fields contrast nicely against brown devices and lettering. Possibly two dozen survive in all grades.

An amazing pattern, of course one of my very favorite series too. The Simpson Pattern Collection is about as good as it ever got for pattern coins in one collection beyond the time that the Treasury Department stopped the sale of former Mint Director H.R. Linderman's collection. I believe most all of the Simpson coins were likely included in the Linderman collection.

Interesting die cracks, wonder how many have been struck on that pair of dies to get those prominent cracks.
