Quote: The census has no idea of how many such notes are tucked away in ancestral family bibles, waiting to be appreciated. Absolutely, Hondo Boguss. I've acquired a number of notes already that were new to the census. Though I never did it, in the past I thought about putting an ad in the paper in the town I was born in to see if I could shake out another note or two from there! I'm sure there are a few around; many people in those small towns have family going back for many generations...

I picked up a couple notes on Heritage recently. The first is a piece of merchant scrip from Holcomb & Barnard in Fayetteville, Arkansas. They were partners in a drug store, and issued three series of notes in January of 1862 in denominations of 25c, 50c, 75c, $1, $2 and $2.50. This is a $1 example from the final series of January 27, 1862. PMG notes some small holes in the paper. John Holcomb signed the note as cashier, and James Barnard endorsed the note on the back. The other is an early $1 Arkansas Treasury Note issued in Little Rock on January 3, 1862. These warrants were issued in a large variety of designs, denominations and paper colors. This one is well-circulated but resides in a comment-free holder.

Two more obscure rarities, Hokie - nice scores! You amaze me with your ability to locate and acquire these rarities.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Thanks, scopru! There's a nice variety of Arkansas obsoletes and scrip coming up in late January on Heritage, including a couple very rare notes. I hope to snag at least some of those!
