Have a look at the photo and give me you opinion as to the I.D. and also the condition. I think its a John 1199-1216 short Cross. Spink 1354, class 6b. It could be another class or even spink 1355. Whats your opinion on the grade please.
Definitely John with that unmistakable hair. It's one "pick up point" for Henry II vs John.
6b2, Abel on Lunde moneyer
Rev. well-centered, a bit crude, and a very interesting letterform for the "A" in the moneyer's legend (Abel) that looks vertically compressed as though it had been squashed down from the top. Obv. has some strike weakness at K5-K7 and legend is slightly off the flan there; lettering is widely spaced, tall, and not particularly sharp
It seems to have an exaggerated yellowish/golden color in the photos that makes me wonder about the underlying surfaces and if it's been subjected to a prior attempt at conservation/preservation; or if it's just due to this being a ground-dug/detector coin as most are found.
I think it nets out around VG. Grading short cross pennies (or, really, any hammered coinage) is often done more "by overall appearance" as opposed to being based on a given coin's individual technical merits.
