2002 D Nickel: What Causes This On Coins?

It's very important to have in the title. * I have run across a couple of coins that look like this and it looks different than ones that have environmental damage to me. It doesn't have the pitting environmental or chemical damage does. Just curious what is to blame when they look like this. It was hard to get accurate pictures, but I did the best I could. Thanks!
