The thought also crossed my mind. There is damage to the side rim, but more at a vertical angle to the main damage. I ran a magnet over it this morning just to see, but it's not magnetic. I'll add some more pictures below.

Weight just checked out. So most likely not a counterfeit.
Doesn't look polished to me in hand, but probably cleaned. Wiped, possibly.

Not a counterfeit. I strongly believe it is a strangely located minor lamination peel. So technically it is an error, but a very unattractive one.

Yes, it just looks weird to me how the layer is peeled back, but there's no damage to the rim itself, and then there's a flat surface under the damage.
