Quote: The reverse here shows Saint Michael fighting with Satan. Wonderful coin! There are a lot of depictions of St. Michael on coins, but in most of them the creature he has vanquished looks far more reptilian than human. The clearly human head in this case really stands out and looks more like a (humanoid) Satan than a serpent.

I'm pretty sure those are a couple of horns on top of the head too. A pity the Numista coin doesn't really show that detail for comparison. I was trying to work out if they were the same die or not - I can't see there being that many of these minted so the number of dies made was likely small.

I'm going to have to go back one as I have found my Innocent X coin and photographed it. It's a ND (1653) 1/2 Grosso from the Rome mint. The reverse has (as mentioned earlier) the more traditional older bust of St. Paul. as it's not on Numista (that I can find) I'm not 100% sure of a couple of letters of the reverse legend. S. PAVLS ?LMA / ROMA It's also tiny at only 13mm

Seems to be KM 258; the reverse legend is S PAVLVS ALMA ROMA.

Oh wow - that updated Numista coin really is a beauty. I hadn't appreciated that there were scales in St. Michael's left hand. It's very clear there.
Thankyou to "january1may" for the Legend update on that Innocent X half Grosso.

It's currently up for sale with a starting price of 150 euros. Though I've now got that type on my radar, that's probably the finest known example, so at that price I'm just gonna sit on my hands and hope I can find one with enough remaining detail for a lot less.

It looks like we may have exhausted this period, and tomorrow can move to the earliest part of the 17th century: Gregory XV (1621-1623) Paul V (1605-1621) Leo XI (1605; as best I can tel lno coins were struck in his 4 week reign) Clement VIII (1592-1605) At least we have some new names

The next time I can contribute will be for Paul V. Looking forward to seeing what else is posted.

The lone Gregory XV coin I have is this 1623 quattrino struck at Ferrara (yep, Saint George again!).
