Nice example.

Interesting to see how the horses head has been portrayed as bending back on itself in quite the contortionist position. I suspect that was the last bit of the die to get engraved.

It is quite possible for a horse to turn it's head like that, maybe the rider pulled on the reins at that moment to when chasing that dragon.

And I'm thinking the date (at 7:00) was the last part of the obverse die? ("Uh-oh. They told me to put the date on this coin!").

Something really interesting about this coin: it bears the pope's birth name in addition to his adopted papal name. The obverse legend is partially worn away, but reads GREGORIVS XV LVDOVICIVS P M. This pope's birth name was Alessandro Ludovisi, and he adopted Gregory for his papal name. So, I am guessing the Ferrara engraver was an amateur in more than one way, because he (presumable mistakenly?) used a a mash-up of the two names on this coin (as well as the half bolognino and the piastra). None of the other papal mints did this, and used the traditional naming, GREGORIVS XV PONT MAX (or an abbreviation).

These idiosyncrasies make older coins much more interesting to me than the (rather stale) mass produced modern ones. That's a great point with the date placement.

Perhaps I'll go again with the next ruler and post this coin of Paul V. It's a 1613 1 Quattrino and again shows St George on the reverse. (head less extended this time). Again from the Ferrera mint.

EDIT: I should have added that the Numista reference does indicate there are many variants of this coin - though none that I can find with the lettering under the exergue

I think once agan you have an unusual variant of an otherwise common coin. Yours is the type with both a pontifical year on the obverse (VII or VIII) and a Gregorian year on the reverse (1613 or 1614 in the exergue). But it's supposed to have the legend FERRARIAE PROTECTOR, and yours has the abbreviation PR (instead of the full second word). I am guessing 1613 in the exergue on yours, because I can only find the PR abbreviation here: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=12182846

The backwards-facing horse came up here before with the 1675 Ferrara quattrino (page 13, my comment on page 14), which had the same detail. So maybe it was deliberate at Ferrara.

Though the 1613 does apparently have the horse facing right...

If no-one else has posted in a while I'll go again with this workhorse coin. It's a simple 1609 1 Quattrino (Paul V) from the Bologna mint. This design seems to have been used for quite a long period by the Bologna mint - with only the year changing/ Quite efficient to not even have to change the rulers name at all.

I also have a Ferrara quattrino, a variant where the obverse legend starts at the top rather than lower left, and the reverse legend is PROTECTOR FERRARIAE starting at lower left, with beaded circles both sides. I have seen examples like mine with an illegible date sold as being from 1613, so presumably it was only struck that year. It's curious that the mint was so busy striking these for just a year or two, and not at the beginning of the reign.

I thought I had one more coin of this pope, but apparently I was wrong, so I am done for this slice
